News Archive from the Spring 2007 SeasonCase Men Advance to Semi-finals at Dad VailsMay 11-12, 2007: Case sent a Varsity Heavyweight Men's 4+ to this year's Dad Vail Regatta. After placing 2nd in their heat on Friday, they progressed to the semi-final on Saturday. This was the first Case men's crew to advance to the semis since 2002. Coach Marcovy was able to ride along the course and watch the heat and semi unfold. In the heat, Case was in the lead rowing hard, yet smooth at the 1200m mark, but Fordham and Temple (both fully funded varsity programs) began their charge. One blade touched a navigation buoy at one point, yet the shell quickly regrouped and kept themselves together well enough to finish within five seconds of Fordham and 1.5 seconds ahead of Temple.
For the semi-final, the crew drew the dreaded lane six. The race course in Philly has a bend and in lanes 5 & 6 the crews start staggered behind the others. If a crew is able to overcome this mental obstacle and stay with the pack around the bend, they then have to contend with the current and turbulence as they come along Peter's Island right before the finish. The Case four improved 12 seconds over their time in the heat (an improvement margin not matched by the other teams) but were still not able to advance to the finals. Their semi was won by the eventual winners, Dowling College.
Of the six collegiate boats entered in this year's Vails from the Cleveland area, Case was the only crew racing on Saturday. And without any Eastern European national team members. GO SPARTANS!!! WV Governor's Cup Cancelled at Mid-day
Racing was halted due to the unrowable conditions and a number of boats sinking. One of the boats that sank was the Case Men's Varsity 4+ in the Sweet J. As the hull was filling up with water, the rowers noticed the 11 year old shell starting to bow so the crew jumped into the water and hung on until the fire boat could pull them out. Rowing at Case = ingenuity and sacrifcing oneself to save one of the few pieces of equipment the team has. Agata Toborek '08 took a few photos to record the event: Photo 1 and Photo 2. Everyone involved was unharmed despite how long it took the rescue boat to come due to the number of shells in distress.

Alumni Regatta a Huge Success
April 22, 2007:
Case Crew hosted it's second annual Alumni Regatta
on the Cuyahoga with alumni coming from as far away as Colorado, Virginia, and Iowa to participate. The Alumni Men won each heat of the
round robin racing format, but were upset in the final by Case's top four by a couple lengths.
The weather gods were smiling and the alumni event went off without a hitch. The evening before racing, the students
and alums headed to Great Lakes Brewing for a mixer. Thankfully, everyone made it down to the races Sunday morning without incident.

The Spring Fundraising Drive was a huge success and brought in over $3,000 to help support Case Crew!!! At the AGM we also elected two
new officers (Dan Bachmann '97, MED'02 as Vice President and Brian Chorney '07 as Secretary) and added one additional seat on the Board of Directors that
will be filled by Tom Hudak '92. Tom was one of the founders of Case Crew and is looking forward to getting re-engaged with supporting the team.
Please welcome and thank Dan, Brian and Tom for volunteering to help the team reach new levels of success.
Case Crew Senior Featured in Spartan Spotlight
Marietta Coach & Case Crew Alumna Stepping DownApril 5, 2007: Karen Glowacki is stepping down as women's rowing coach at Marietta College at the end of the spring season. If you were a part of Case Crew in the 1990's you'll know Karen well. She was instrumental in helping build Case Crew into a successful team and we all wish her well. To read the university press release click HERE. As you'll see from the article she was involved in just about everything with the team during her time in Cleveland. Men's and Women's Eights Each Take Bronze at UAA Championships!April 1, 2007: Case Crew took on its UAA rivals at the annual University Rowing Association Championship Regatta held at Lake Arthur just north of Pittsburgh. Crews from Wash U, U Rochester, Carnegie-Mellon, NYU, and U Chicago were in attendance.
Wash U took home both point trophies for men & women again this year. The silver Case Alumni Cup for men's team points was generously donated by SARA four years ago in support of the race. Case Crew Wins Fifth Annual Home Schools Regatta!March 24, 2007: The Home Schools Regatta is held every year in Cleveland between the local rowing colleges: Case, John Carroll, Cleveland State, and Baldwin-Wallace. The race is meant to be a spring tune up, and the format, distance, and points are decided each year between the head coaches of each program. This year's racing awarded one point to each winning crew, and races were two abreast over 1500m. Case walked away with the overall cup (now sponsored by the Cleveland Rowing Foundation) by winning 5 out of ten races. This is the second year in a row Case has won the Cleveland area cup. The Case women's team Were near perfect again this year by only dropping a race in the varsity 4+. The Case men's squad picked up wins in the varsity 8+ and 4+. Case Crew Wins 2007 Hammer Cup!February 18, 2007: The annual Hammer Ergatta was held on John Carroll's campus this year, and Case Crew won the Hammer Cup for the fourth straight year over rival John Carroll by a narrow 1.3 seconds! The Cup is decided every year by averaging of the top rowers from each squad: Varsity Men & Women and Novice Men & Women. The verdict since the Cup's inception is Case 7 wins to JCU's 6. The archive of past Hammer Cup results can be found HERE (html). Case walked away with 5 individual gold medals and a team gold in the Mixed Relay. Team Regards were also set in four events: Open Men, Open Women, Lightweight Men, and Lightweight Women. Here's a list of the best Case Crew finishers in each event:
The other notable finish from the race was Coach Tim Marcovy's time of 7:10.4 (adjusted) in the Veteran Men's race. The race rotates between John Carroll and Case every year, and full results from this year's race can be found HERE (html). Rowers Pull Hard in PittsburghFebruary 3, 2007: Case Crew doesn't normally go every year to Pittsburgh to compete in the Indoor Championships, but the team does go every once in a while. A select group of Case Crew members made the couple hour drive to the other city next to a dirty river to pull a 2k. Miranda Cullins had the strongest outing of the day taking home gold in the Open Women's event with a time of 7:13.8! She bested 23 other atheletes from Penn State, Duquesne, Three Rivers and Case to take home the gold. While Miranda's effort was the only one that resulted in hardware, other members of the team performed well. Full results from this year's race can be found HERE (html)
